Description
A late Roman terracotta oinochoe with rounded base and incised encircling lines below the rim.
An oinochoe is a type of Greek and Roman wine jug used for pouring liquids, especially wine. The name comes from the Greek oinos (“wine”) and cheo (“to pour”). Typically they had a rounded or slightly globular body, a narrow neck, a single handle connecting the neck to the shoulder, and a spout for pouring. Many Late Roman oinochoe were plain or lightly painted, while some had geometric patterns and/or motifs.
